Playing with type

Hat-trick take inspiration from the graphically rich aspects of chess and redesigns a chess set in typographic style.

Following widespread research on chess art and graphics Hat-trick Design has created a chess set like no other.

Hat-trick has reshaped the original figurines of a chess set into letterforms. They have created a limited edition of 50 sets that sees the typeface “Champion”, created by Hoefler Frere Jones, moving around the blocks of the board. The Q and the P were redrawn to ensure the stability of the figure while in playing motion.

All pieces are cut from 25mm acrylic and are between 50mm and 30mm tall. The board is made from 2mm pieces of greyboard and foiled in black.

Hat-trick have taken care to pay attention to detail in every aspect of the chess set, including its packaging. The set is boxed in a foam tray with a greyboard sleeve and includes a few game quotes printed onto the information sheet.
