Designed by Japanese outfit Nendo, the Pyggy Bank is a concept for Isetan Department Store’s “Piggy Bank Collection”, an exhibition that formed part of the recent Tokyo Designer’s Week.
Pyggy Bank has subtle references to the history of the piggy bank and the way that money was collected and stored in the past. The story goes that in Medieval Europe households would store their extra coins in jars made of unglazed clay, with a reddish tint. This clay was known as “pygg”, thus “pig”.
In considering this history, Nendo’s Pyggy Bank with it’s pig-snouted slots and pinkish colour is playful and function.
