Nearly 30 years after his death, the Goodman Gallery Johannesburg presents the work of Walter Battiss, one of South Africa’s most well-known modernist painters.
Titled Battis & Company, the exhibition showcases both well-known and rarely or never seen before work by Battiss, which can be seen until 6 August 2011. A part of the exhibition space is also dedicated to work by artists who were close to Battiss, both personally and professionally.
Curated by Neil Dundas, Battiss & Company comprises early drawings, sketches, prints and oil paintings that reveal something of the development of the artist’s approach to his art making. There is a key focus on Battiss’s distillation of a visual language based on San rock art. An influence that went on to impact his contemporaries too.
