Intelligent Garden

London’s Chelsea Flower Show hosts the Intelligent Garden – an installation merging AI with the local ecosystem.

Architecture, machine learning and ecology merge in the Intelligent Garden, an installation by Studio Weave, landscape designer Tom Massey and Sebastian Cox. The installation fuses living architecture, fungal materials, and environmental insight to create an intelligent garden that interprets signals from its plants, soil, and air to inform caretakers with precise data of the state of the local ecosystem.

The installation comprises of four prefabricated biodegradable volumes. The structures is made from woven ash timber frames that are paired with organic mycelium panels—grown from agricultural byproducts in Cox’s studio. These biomaterials form a compostable pavilion that appears to have been both grown and built. Within the structure there are sensors to monitor soil moisture, humidity, and light, feeding real-time data into Avanade’s AI platform. The pavilion has been with disassembly in mind, allowing it to be relocated post the show.

The exterior of the installation features a micro-courtyard designed for workshops. Meanwhile, a “mushroom parlour” nurtures fungal bodies, demonstrating the ideal conditions for growth.

The intelligent showpiece by Studio Weave’s project maps a future where built environments are attuned to ecological rhythms – allowing for mutual sustainable growth.
