The annual awarding of the prestigious London Design Medal is one of the highlights at the London Design Festival. The 2010 medal was recently awarded to Thomas Heatherwick for his outstanding contribution to design and for achieving international acclaim with his work.
Sir John Sorrell, chairman of the London Design Festival, presented the award to Heatherwick and commented on his versatility: “Thomas Heatherwick is a designer who defies definition whether he is working in the fields of architecture, product design, sculpture or urban planning.”
On receiving the medal, Heatherwick said it was an honour and a surprise. "London is the city I was born and brought up in; an endlessly exciting mish-mash of a place that inspires me and my team in the projects we do."
