Do Not Disturb

A new model for environmentally sensitive construction.

Developed and unveiled in Jinan China is a revolutionary feat of inflatable architecture - the world’s largest inflated dome has been installed to serve as a supportive structure to protect and contain a construction site. Spanning 20,000 square metres and rising 50 metres high, the marshmallow-like air-supported structure envelopes the Honglou 1905 urban renewal project—one of the city’s largest redevelopment initiatives.

Engineered by China Energy Construction Group and Licheng Urban Development Group, the dome is fabricated from high-strength, heat-reflective polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), providing both durability and environmental protection. This innovative dome was designed not just to shelter the build, but to safeguard the surrounding community—including homes, schools, and a historic church from dust, debris and noise pollution that typically emanates from large scale construction sites.

The dome blocks 90% of construction dust, reduces noise pollution by 80%, and shields workers from Jinan’s unforgiving weather, including heavy rain, snow, and gale-force winds. Its column-free interior enables seamless work by heavy machinery, while climate and air-quality are actively managed by integrated ventilation and sprinkler systems.

Set for removal once the project completes, Jinan’s inflatable dome demonstrates new potential for “silent mode” urban construction—merging environmental sensitivity, community care in contemporary city-building.
