PG Bison’s annual Student Design Competition and Awards are doing it slightly differently this year. They’ve got a new name, a new logo and new judges drawn from industry leaders and design gurus.

1.sixoneeight is the new name of the competition and refers to the Golden Ratio. The Golden Ratio is a phenomenon that occurs in art, architecture, design, music and mathematics. It indicates that the properties of physical elements exhibit a clear mathematical ratio proportion. It is believed that human beings are attracted to things that have the characteristics of the Golden Ratio or are built to its proportions. History is full of designers that have proportioned their works on this ratio in the hope that it will be aesthetically pleasing.

1.sixoneeight is calling on all interior design and architecture students to design a concept “store of the future” for home and furniture retail outlet At Home.  They’re challenging students to express their creativity in a way suited to the fast-paced and ever-changing world. Can you create the look and feel for a retail space of the future while retaining the principles and values of design that have stood the test of time?

Submission date for entries is 13 August 2010. First prize is a trip for the student and their lecturer to the 2011 Milan Furniture Fair in Italy. The winner of the merit award gets a trip to the awesome 2011 Design Indaba in Cape Town.
