Thabang Mamabolo is the founder and creative director of Mamabolo Jewellers, a jewellery design and manufacturing company. Born and raised in Mamelodi, the designer holds a national diploma in jewellery design and manufacture from the Tshwane University of Technology.
Registered in 2019, his young business specialises in bespoke contemporary jewellery. Mamabolo draws his inspirations from nature and his late grandmother who was a Ndebele artist. Growing up and watching his grandmother work inspired him to follow a career in the arts.
He is currently working on a range as a tribute to his grandmother inspired by her art works. Some of his other projects include a jewellery and fashion collaboration with former Design Indaba Emerging Creative Ditiro Mashigo.
Having being classically trained, he learned early on that commercial jewellery was not for him and this was made possible by Nina Newman, his former lecturer who held his hand through his artistic self-discovery.
Veronica Anderson Jewellery in Rosebank, Johannesburg currently stock his work. Other than jewellery, Mamabolo Jewellers also has a CSI project that is aimed at teaching matriculants about healthy living and dealing with the pressures of university life. Mamabolo dreams of one day opening a design school that will train people from disadvantaged communities.
