Nqakaza was born in Bizana in the Eastern Cape and studied graphic design at the Ruth Prowse School of Art. His work explores the use of geometric shapes to construct meaning in different ways.
Nqakaza's designs are inspired by a proud knowledge of his traditional African language of symbols from which he has developed two-dimensional patterns. These patterns and symbols convey messages about African people and their culture and explore how identical symbols can communicate different meanings. The designs are used to create paper bags, handbags and cushion covers.
