Central Saint Martins graduate, Megan Turtle, has been awarded the Cambridge Consultants Associate Prize for Breakthrough Design at New Designers 2026 for her innovation EyeCapture device. EyeCapture uses smartphone technology to help people with diabetes capture images of their eyes at home, supporting retinal health monitoring making screening more accessible. The concept was designed in response to a significant challenge in preventative healthcare. Regular retinal screening can be difficult to access, particularly for people who face barriers around travel, time or healthcare availability.
For Cambridge Consultants, which sponsors the annual prize, EyeCapture stood out for the way it balances technical feasibility with accessibility, usability and sustainability. The award specifically recognises emerging designers who address unmet needs across medical, consumer, energy and industrial applications, with judging criteria spanning impact, differentiation, ease of use, form and ethical and sustainable considerations.
The project demonstrates the potential of design to make sophisticated healthcare technologies feel less intimidating and more integrated into everyday life. By rethinking where and how essential health monitoring happens, EyeCapture places accessibility at the centre of innovation.
