The winners and finalists for this year's Construction New Media Awards were announced at a ceremony at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Thursday 26 February 2004. The judges Tom Roope, Patrick Burgoyne and Andries Odendaal were there to present the awards and share their thought process with all attending. Eight Gold trophies were awarded, and two Grands Prix were awarded this year.

Tom Roope

"As a returning judge to the construction new media awards I was once again reminded how the submitted work both reflected the creative issues being dealt with in the greater digital community as well as projecting the unique and exciting creativity being produced locally. This year there was a striking improvement in both the diversity, and the quality of thinking applied across commercial and non-commercial arenas. This diversity and quality was reflected in the awarding of two Grand Prix Prizes for the first time. I was particularly pleased to award one of the major prizes in the student category, the section that I really get excited about getting to when I am prejudging in dreary winter London."

Patrick Burgoyne

"The student Grand Prix-winner -Makebox- was everything that online work should be - intelligent, engaging and something that could only work in that medium. It was also highly subversive - sort of like the old cliche about locking monkeys in a room with typewriters and them producing Shakespeare eventually. Overall, the interactive design world is beginning to mature, to get over the need simply to demonstrate technical ability and actually produce work with some ideas behind it and this is what we, as judges, were searching for. The winners represent what we thought were pieces of work that, on some level, engaged, surprised and pleased us on an emotional and intellectual level as well as aesthetic and technical ones."

Andries Odendaal

"The message communicated by one's decisions is an important part of judging any award. For me it is important to award work that does its job well. However, this in itself is not enough criteria to award on. In order to be considered 'good', one would expect a work to do its job well by default. What becomes more commendable is work that, in addition to the above, also exhibits that extra step in thought regarding its application, execution and use of the medium (regardless of the category that it was judged in). I am pleased to say that we have seen a large percentage of very competent work. Of course the better the standard of entries, the smaller the margin by which one can set works aside as winners. The works that stood out at the end of the day were the works that exhibited those finer details in thought, application and/or production that we liked. Thank you for all the good work and a big 'Congratulations' to all the winners."
