Through the rise and demise of controversial Afrikaans rock phoenix Fokofpolisiekar, Bellville has come to be known as an iconic rock music hotbed. However, Fokofpolisiekar itself is the product of a music scene that has bubbled beneath the mainstream media for a decade or more. The CD/DVD box set Bellville Rock City offers a veritable resource of profiles, music videos, tracks and documentary coverage featuring 20 bands. The accomplished documentary 12 Mile Stone uses a traditional music scene rhetoric to portray the scene’s political, religious, musical, historical and personal context. Far from being historic, this scene is still thriving and with grainy pictures of 1950s boxers and gold embossing, the design and packaging add a tongue-in-cheek edge to the retrospective demur that such compilations can have.
