Wood City

World’s largest timber city is underway in Sickla, Sweden

Sweden broke ground on an ambitious project to build the world's largest wooden city, The project titled ‘Stockholm Wood City’, developed by Swedish real estate company Atrium Ljungberg aims to integrate sustainability with urban living by utilising cross-laminated timber, a material sourced from Sweden’s extensive forests (Sweden's landmass being 70% forested) as the primary building material. This choice significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional concrete and steel construction.

Beyond sustainability, the project prioritizes human well-being. Wooden buildings have been shown to improve air quality and create a calming environment, contributing to healthier living and working spaces. Using wood also means quiet construction sites and reduces the number of heavy transports during the construction period Annica Ånäs, CEO of Atrium Ljungberg, emphasizes that the development aims to "lead the way for the next generation of urban projects."

The Wood City is located in Sickla, south of Stockholm, aims to become vibrant, eco-friendly community. It is the world’s largest urban development project built in wood and will become a mixed-use community that integrates 7000 office spaces, 2000 residential homes.
