Urban redesign

Bjarke Ingels is the second contender to redevelop the iconic Miami Beach Convention Centre.

Seeking to increase the density of the urban landscape in Florida, Bjarke Ingels is the second contender for a major redevelopment of the Miami Beach Convention Centre. The centre is currently home to many major events, including Art Basel Miami.

Renowned architect Bjarke Ingels is running against his former mentor Rem Koolhaas; Koolhaas' wishes to restore the current building, add a hotel and turn the desolate site into a connected, cohesive urban district.

Bjarke, on the other hand, proposes to implement a network of prismatic structures linked by ribbons and folded planes of greenery.

The master plan takes full advantage of the area’s sunny and warm climate by promoting areas and promenades, which are shaded and integrate the existing canals running through the urban landscape.

The historic Jackie Gleason theatre will be preserved and subtly renovated to keep the historic and traditional components of the area intact.
