Now in its second year, Focus 10 features emerging and established artists from Africa and the Diaspora at Art Basel in Switzerland. In an intimate atmosphere, visitors can view a variety of artistic productions.
The first part of the show comprises “Artists Visions: A Snapshot of Contemporary African art” featuring up-and-coming artists who responded to an open call by Focus in 2009. Curators Christine Eyene (London) and Lerato Bereng (Johannesburg) selected 12 artists whose topics, aesthetics, mediums and techniques are all reflective of new trends emerging from Africa and the Diaspora. A prerequisite for selection was that the work had to be relevant to the context of Art Basel. “Artists Visions” include the works of artists like Faith47, Frauke Stegmman, Ricky Lee Gordon, Justin Fiske and Breeze Yoko.
The second part is courtesy of Galerie Peter Herrmann, and features artists Dalila Dalleas (Louzla Darabi), Amouzou Glikpa Amouza, Bill Kouélany, Goddy Leye, Malam, George Osodi, Chéri Samba and Ransome Stanley. Herrmann is known for his ongoing support for both established artists and newcomers. The gallery is one of a few galleries in the world to consistently and accurately present Africa over the course of an extended artistic timeline.
To help visitors understand the various aspects of contemporary African art, Focus 10 is presenting side events that include artists talks, workshops, panel discussions and concerts. A work by Kouélany and Leye titled "Chocolate Banana" will be driven around Basel in a taxi.
