Sanitary solutions

Design Without Borders has developed an ecological urinal for home use in slums and remote areas.

From the Series

One of the most significant sources of disease in slum areas is the lack of sufficient sanitation. To address this pressing issue, Design Without Borders has developed a Unisex Urinal.

In collaboration with Ugandan plastic manufacturer Crestanks, Design Without Borders has developed an ecological urinal for home use. The Unisex Urinal prevents odour, takes up little space and requires minimal maintenance. Furthermore, the production of each is remarkably economical, making it affordable for ordinary citizens in slums and remote areas.

Along with addressing issues of disease, the urinal also offers an entrepreneurial solution. The urinal retains all the nutrients found in urine, which is refined by a simple process. Families are then able to sell it as a high-quality fertiliser.

Initiated in 2001 by Norsk Form and Peter Opsvik, Design Without Borders was established to highlight problematic issues in developing countries, such as underdeveloped economies and infrastructures. Today, Design Without Borders is continuing to reveal how design can be used as a tool for long-term aid and emergency relief.

Unisex Urinal is a finalist in the Community category of the INDEX: Award 2013
