Roadside seating

The winning proposal in the Gauteng iteration of the Your Street Challenge, Twist Street has been completed.

The newly completed Twist Street project offers a new and exciting way of utilising public space.

Situated in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, the Twist Street project designed by architects Jason Frenkel and Tom Chapman aims to create opportunities for engagement within the city.

The project sees theatre-like seating installed on the street opposite a dance studio in order to bring the magic of theatre and dance to passers-by.

The theatre-like seating engages with the Youth Centre, Resource Centre and Dance Centre across the street, while providing real possibility for an engagement between the public and the private, says Frenkel.

The idea behind the public seating concept allows the public to engage with what’s going on inside the building from the new vantage point.

The Twist Street project was the winning proposal in the Gauteng iteration of the Your Street Challenge, an initiative that transforms space through creative thought one street at a time.
