Publically functional

The Western Cape Furniture Design Competition is calling on designers to create beautiful, functional public furniture pieces with alien wood.

The Western Cape Furniture Initiative Design Competition is calling on Western Cape-based designers, over the age of 18, to enter a public furniture design that uses alien wood.

“Multi-function design for public furniture” is the theme of the competition and tasks designers with thinking about sustainable and innovative concepts for furniture that can add value to public spaces.

In addition to gracing a public space with an attractive visual element, the furniture should also enhance social interaction. By using alien wood for the furniture, designers are also helping to deal with the scourge of invasive alien trees.

Entrants should pay special attention to the size, weight and aesthetic interpretation of their designs. The judges will also consider the multi-functionality, colour, batch production, durability, cost effectiveness and ergonomics of the design.

Designers can enter in the student category or in the open category but need to do so before 30 November 2011. There’s a total of R75 000 in prizes to be won. The final winners will be announced at Design Indaba Expo on 4 March 2012.
