Portable shelter

The Cocoon is a portable shelter for the homeless, which hopes to bring a bit of relief to their dire circumstances.

Hwang Kim is a student at the Royal College of Art where he is particularly concerned with the plight of the homeless.

His Cocoon design, a portable cardboard shelter for homeless people, is made from pre-folded single ply cardboard with plastic buttons that can easily be made smaller or flattened for easy transporting. The structure is noticeably lightweight and folds open into a three-dimensional bed form.

Drawing inspiration from cocoons found in nature, Kim’s design is based on the idea that if there is protection from the elements, that which is inside can continue to live and grow.
