Cheeky, bouncy and bold – here's a sampling of this prolific Cape Town-based designer's recent work.

Ting Chong was approached by Cape Town clothing brand Unknown Union to design all-over prints for its winter collection.

"We wanted the initial designs to reference Shweshwe fabrics but still feel contemporary and quite flat in style," says Ting Chong, who developed five different prints.

The "No Direction Home" print for Unknown Union uses a compass motif in electric blue. All the prints were applied to black and white t-shirts and sweatshirts.

Here the "Semaphore Flag design" in a grass green is applied on a white t-shirt.

The "Ostrich Feathers" print is a contemporary design inspired by the iconic South African bird. All the garments are made from 100% brushed cotton printed with water-based pigments.

The zesty "Vitamin C" design shows a random scattering of orange slices. The brand does all its development, from the pattern-making to cutting and sewing, at the Unknown Union store, in Kloof Street Cape Town.

The NineFour logo is for a Cape Town running crew. The rabbit has a tail in the shape of a lightning bolt to evoke speed and agility. The name derives from South Africa becoming a democracy in 1994 and the freedom associated with it as well as with running. "For the NineFour logo I did not want it to feel too childlike but still contain some element of play and convey the idea of movement," he says.

The bandana project was part of a group exhibition for the charity 'Ride for Larry Pierce' held at The House of Machines. "My design was based on the documentary 'Godspeed You! Black Emperor' about a biker gang, the Black Emperors, in Japan. The 1976 documentary provided a lot of rich material to work with and made my decisions about illustrative elements and colour choice fairly simple," Ting Chong explains.

TIng Chong was brief to do several illustrations for the prestigious D&AD Winners Annual 2014. The brief was to give a sense of your country. Unfortunately the illustrations were ultimately not used for the annual.

Also for D&AD, this illustration of the President's car is evident of Ting Chong's signature tongue-in-cheek sense of humour.

Daniel Ting Chong is nothing if not prolific. The young designer, who first showed his work as part of the Emerging Creatives programme at Design Indaba Expo 2008, is now counted as one of the top local graphic design talents. 

Ting Chong keeps busy with commissions for clients as well as design collaborations with leading international brands including the likes of RVCA, The New York Times and the Discovery Channel. 

Most recently he extended his foray into print design for clothing with a collection for Cape Town-based label Unknown Union and a bandana design for a group exhibition at The House of Machines.
