Magpies and makeovers

Creative alternatives to mass-produced furniture are always welcome. And of course it doesn’t hurt that it’s chic and ultra-modern.

Breathing new life into furniture that would otherwise be discarded is the premise of Furniture Magpies, a London-based furniture design and make company.

Specialising in regenerating old furniture to meet the needs and desires of modern customers, while retaining the character and story of the furniture is what Magpies hope to achieve. The company was launched at Tent London at the London Design Festival recently.

Creating once-off and limited pieces, the company works to ensure that each piece that is saved from a landfill site, maintains some of it original identity. The small design team are sponsored by a new Enterprise fellowship at Bucks New University.

Comprising various domestic furniture pieces, lighting and accessories, the collection includes the interesting-sounding “Hang on to your drawers” bedside table and dressing table range. The lighting and accessory range meanwhile explores the beauty and versatility of chair components while “Lovely Legs” includes a climbing wall, table lamps and wall hooks.
