Lookbook: Over the Rainbow

A new exhibition in France shows Scholten & Baijings's creative portfolio from the past 14 years.

Part of the CHROMOS collection, this carafe and tumbler saw the designers experimenting with hand-blown glass. Traditional coloured glass is given a contemporary update with metallic coating and understated forms.

Colour Carpets, a collaboration between Scholten & Baijings and HAY, is a series of luxurious carpets that creates optical transparency by using colour gradients. The carpets are made using wool sourced in New Zealand.

Scholten & Baijings explore light and shadow in their Dot chair for HAY, here displayed for the first time. With more than 1 300 perforations, the holes create tactility by adding an extra layer to the chair’s plastic material. The perforated holes vary in size, bringing a sense of movement to its appearance. The Dot chair is available in three versions: two stackable powder-coated designs with or without armrests and one with wooden legs. Image: Inga Powilleit.

The Colour Globe lamps for Moooi produce a dynamic lighting effect. Two layers of fine mouth-blown glass run parallel in a rounded embrace of playful details and colourful contrasts. The light’s lively shape, shiny colour and see-through pattern make for a playful design.

A series of tea towels for HAY play with simple geometric patterns in bright fluorescent yarns.

The Tilt Top table was conceived for small living areas. The table folds completely flat against a wall and has patterns on both sides that draw on Scholten & Baijings’s hallmark use of bright colours.

Scholten & Baijings created five tables inspired by the unique patterns and hues of marble for Italian marble producer Luce Di Carrara. Called Solid Patterns, the collection's organic forms were each created using a specific marble colour and tone found in the Tuscan regions. Dutch design duo Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings have had a remarkably consistent output of work in the 14 years since they opened their studio. Working with some of the most high profile brands, they have produced one commercial hit after another and carved out a distinctive style that fuses minimal forms, heightened colour and the melding of craft and industrial production.

A new exhibition, Over the Rainbow, at the Villa Noailles in France showcases their prodigious body of work since 2000. Unsurprisingly, the colour fundis have developed a palette for their exhibition space, taking inspiration from the surrounding landscape and sky.

Over the Rainbow is open until the beginning of September 2014.
