Lighting up

Dirk Vander Kooij has designed the world's largest 3D printed object, the Lenses Vase.

Dirk Vander Kooij has fostered a popular meeting spot with the design of a vase that functions as both a sculpture as well as a light source for New Babylon’s lobby.

Dutch product designer Vander Kooij is best known for using recycled plastic to create a variety of sustainable objects. His latest creation, however, deviates from this traditional use of materials.

The Lenses Vase is a three-metre high object made in a crystal clear synthetic. Featuring a pattern of 30 000 lenses produced using his renowned 3D printing robot, the vase is said to be the largest creation made to date using this increasingly popular method of manufacturing. The lenses magnify natural light during the day and the use of 12 000 LEDs illuminate the magnificent object at night.
