Farewell to a legend of literature

Poet, essayist, academic and teacher Stephen Watson has sadly passed away.

Design Indaba’s warmest condolences to the friends and family of Stephen Watson, a South African creative leader extraordinaire. Watson will be fondly remembered for his passion and commitment to local creativity, thought leadership, literature and the nurturing and mentoring of emerging writers.

Watson died, age 56, on Sunday 10 April 2011 after taking ill from cancer some months ago.

Having spent most his career anchored at the University of Cape Town, Watson was well recognised for the passion with which he directed the Writing Centre at the institution.  In his poetry his love and appreciation for the Cape’s natural beauty was especially apparent. Though best known for this poetry, Watson also established himself as a brilliant essayist, writing on a variety of topics.

Watson is survived by his wife and two children.
