The Science Barge is a prototype sustainable urban farm and environmental education centre powered by solar, wind and biofuels, and irrigated by rain and purified river water. Afloat the Hudson River in New York, the Science Barge claims to be “the only fully functioning demonstration of renewable energy supporting sustainable food production in New York City”. The tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce grown on the Science Barge require seven times less land and four times less water than field crops.
