The Plumen 001 lightbulb, by British product design company Hulger, has won the Brit Insurance Design Award at the Design Museum in London.
Previously featured on Design Indaba, the Plumen 001 is a beautifully sculpted energy saving light bulb. The Plumen 001 was created is a collaboration between Nicolas Roope and British designer Samuel Wilkinson, with the aim to bring much-needed style and an element of play to this everyday object.
In addition to the aesthetic makeover the Plumen suggests for the generic lightbulb, it is also uses 80% less energy and lasts eight times longer than incandescent bulbs.
Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum said: “A worthy winner that is both beautiful and smart. It does away with the superfluous to achieve maximum economy of means. It’s a bulb that doesn’t need a shade and so goes a long way to make up for the loss of the Edison original.”
The Plumen 001 and other shortlisted designs are on show at the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year exhibition at the Design Museum in London until 7 August 2011.
