Adept Materials has launched LilyPad, a humidity-regulating paint that turns ordinary walls into environmental partners. The innovative design transforms interior wall surfaces into active contributors to indoor air quality. LilyPad incorporates a proprietary formulation that absorbs and releases moisture in response to changes in indoor humidity. In high humidity conditions, the paint traps excess moisture, helping to prevent dampness and mould growth; when the air becomes dry, it gradually releases stored moisture back into the room. This passive, dynamic exchange stabilises indoor humidity without electricity, fans, or dehumidifiers, contributing to healthier and more resilient spaces.
The paint’s material design represents a shift in how we conceive finishes. Instead of inert surface treatments, the paint functions as a living membrane, adapting to environmental fluctuations. Its chemistry draws on responsive polymers that have appeared in smart textiles and has a broad potential for impact. In climates with large daily or seasonal humidity swings, LilyPad can significantly improve thermal comfort, air quality and occupant wellbeing. It also reduces reliance on mechanical HVAC intervention, offering architects and interior designers a climate-responsive tool that aligns with sustainability goals.
