There's a lot of cynicism in the world about the role of design, says Chen.

The design graduate from Rhode Island School of Design believes that to affect design for social change it needs to be not just a bottom-up process but an inside-out one.

As a designer Chen says he is commited to using design to create empathy by allowing design to cut a path through people's lives.
