Verna Jooste has been making jewellery since she graduated with a Higher Diploma in Jewellery Design from Natal Technikon in 1991. She has taught at several tertiary institutions including her alma mater, Peninsula University of Technology, Johannesburg Art Foundation, the National School of the Arts and Cape Peninsula University of Technology. She currently teaches at the Stellenbosch University’s Department of Visual Arts.
Although she is located in the world of academia, Jooste has devoted her time to the practice of making rather than research. She has participated in 33 exhibitions, including international shows in Finland and the Czech Republic, a solo at the Bag Factory and group shows at Die Klein Karoo Kuns Fees, Brett Kebble Art Awards, Sasol New Signatures and Volkskas Atelier. She has works in the SABC and Art Bank Collections.
Jooste has worked on many public commissions and has made works for the Constitutional Court, the World Summit on Sustainability, Faraday Market, the City of Johannesburg Christmas Tree Project and Red Bull. She has also been commissioned by other visual artists such as Brett Murray, Kathryn Smith, Hentie van der Merwe and Andrew Verster.
She has run projects and workshops for the National Arts Council and the Department of Arts and Culture, and sits on the curatorial panel for the Jewellery sector at Design Indaba Expo.
