Simone Toerien studied graphic design and worked as a web designer before leaving that line of work to pursue her interest in jewellery design. She completed a short jewellery course at Ralph Walton Design in 2013 and launched her brand, Folkloriikka, in 2014. Her designs are created predominantly by wax carving which is then cast in sterling silver.
Toerien’s love of nature and her fascination with folklore and mythology is reflected in her jewellery designs, such as her delicate sleeping mice pendants or her curled fox rings. She designs her collections to be small, unique works of art, rather than seasonal ranges based on trends. Folkloriikka pieces can be found on Superbalist.com and at Traveling Folk on Long Street in Cape Town.
