After attending advertising school in 2008, Michael Rowlinson started WeWOOD Wooden Watches in 2011 and for every watch sold, a tree was planted. However, when Rowlinson discovered that the manufacturing company was not adhering to the strict "reclaimed wood-only" standards, he pulled the plug. This in itself says much of Rowlinson's ethics and ideas of design.
Rowlinson has furthered his social entrepreneurship efforts by founding the UMBALA baby blanket range. Each blanket is made up of locally weaved cotton and acrylic, and features a bright, African pattern designed by Rowlinson. For each blanket sold, a blanket will be donated to an orphaned child. Rowlinson strives to create an ethical brand that empowers local artisans.
