The Makery is a beading studio based in Johannesburg, South Africa. It designs and manufactures beaded necklaces and bracelets, inspired by a timeless African tradition and designed with a contemporary aesthetic to appeal to the modern global traveller with independent style.
The founders and designers are former VISI and ELLE magazine editor Jacquie Myburgh Chemaly and Heidi Gresty, owner of Mad About Beads in Johannesburg. They work with a team of talented beaders as well as training newcomers to the craft.
The Makery started in 2012, with the signature necklaces – Heartstrings – made using delicate Japanese miyuki seed beads and brass findings. Subsequent collections have included Gemstrings that include semi-precious stones and Masai Strings, which were inspired by Kenyan style as well as a collection of complementary friendship bracelets.
