While completing his fashion design degree at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Lukhanyo Mdingi created two collections. The first was the Granite Collection – a contrasting range based on hard, soft, matte and sheen elements that balance ready-to-wear with avant-garde pieces. The second collection, Basics, focuses on clean minimal looks that are strong and distinct, using fabrics that enhance and expose the female form.
Mdingi’s latest collection, Iridescence, aims to identify the meaning of avant-garde aesthetics with regards to fashion design, specifically focusing on menswear in South Africa. It is an investigation of how innovation and craft can be used to achieve the avant-garde, as well as a study of form and the use of unconventional materials.
