Gary Harwood is a director at the brand agency Harwood Kirsten Leigh McCoy (HKLM). Previously executive creative director at Enterprise IG Africa Middle East and KSDP Pentagraph, Cape Town, Gary is a prominent figure in the branding and design arena. His industry career spans 17 years and his expertise is centred on multidisciplinary design and brand strategy.
Harwood is chairman of the South African Graphic Design Council (Think) and vice chairman for the representative body for design in South Africa (One Voice). His portfolio features both local and international brands including Cell C, Dimension Data, Eskom, Sun International, Old Mutual, Coca-Cola, Sanlam, Castle Lager, Tiger Brands, AngloGold Ashanti, Barloworld, Investec, Southern Sun, FNB, RMB, Nedbank and Wrigleys. He also worked on the Coca-Cola account for the Athens Olympics.
He is a regular speaker at various conferences, colleges and institutions, and often contributes branding-related opinion pieces to industry publications and other media, including radio and television. His design work has been awarded at the Loeries, Spadas, Clios and at London International Design Week. In addition, he received the 2005 Alumni Dignitas Award from the University of Johannesburg, where he sits on the advisory council of the Department of Design.
