Chris de Beer started his studies at Technikon Natal and went on to obtain a Masters in Fine Art, majoring in jewellery, from the University of Stellenbosch. Since 1994 he has headed up the Jewellery Department at Technikon Natal, now the Durban Institute of Technology (DIT). As a teacher, he nurtures the talent of his students, with many of them going on to win awards for their work.
He still finds time, however, to produce award-winning jewellery designs of his own. An exhibition in 2005 presented work that he had created in collaboration with Zulu craftspeople, including sandal and bead makers. He has also drawn inspiration from traditional weaving techniques. His focus is on the development of indigenous jewellery, a passion which has so consumed his time and energy that there is little left to pursue his other interests.
