Bentley van Wyk studied ceramic design at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, where he developed a love for throwing on the potter’s wheel. He plans on starting his own business and continuing to refine his skills as a master potter. Van Wyk is inspired by fractals, which are unpredictable in specific details yet deterministic when viewed as a total pattern. This led to him developing his own decorating technique, exploring surface decoration using individually made wood, plaster and clay stamps. The earthenware or porcelain thrown-form bowls are decorated with these repetitive patterns and enhanced with a combination of oxides and glazes, while others are left white.
