Industrial metal meets weathered wood in Meyer von Wielligh’s Instomi metal sideboard from the carpentry studio's organic-inspired signature collection.
Each piece in the Instomi (“stories” in Xhosa) range tells the story of the tree through the pith – the middle part of a branch or trunk – which shows the tree’s age and the conditions under which it grew. The front of the sideboard is composed of panels cut from the end grain of an oak log, which turns the grain into the central feature.
Norman Meyer and Abrie von Wielligh’s company, based in George in the Western Cape, introduced metal into its furniture and lighting designs late last year. The joiners and cabinet-makers are known for their detailing, evident here in the finger joints on the sidetable’s corners, which brings a woody feel to the metal.
Meyer von Wielligh uses only sustainably soured timber – in this case American white oak. Wood oils give the piece a rich patina and can be tinted according to the customer’s specifications.
