NEW DATES FOR DESIGN INDABA 2008

Design Indaba will fortify as the South African Design Week with the expo and conference programme running over a week from Saturday 23 to Friday 29 February, 2008.

An addition, the week will host DIS 2008 (Designing Interactive Systems), the first main SIGCHI conference to be held in Africa. DIS 2008 will be held at the CTICC in conjunction with the Design Indaba from February 25 to 27, 2008. It will be the first DIS conference to be held outside the US or Europe and aims to challenge participants to reflect on designing interactive systems for users outside these established markets. Email: dis2008@acm.org for more information.

The Expo will precede the conference next year and will be extended for an extra day. Due to demand from delegates to attend the Specialist Indabas, they will run parallel to the Expo in 2008. The Design Indaba Expo will open to the public on Saturday February 23 and run until Tuesday February 26. The floor is filling up fast, so to avoid disappointment book your space now.

On-site delegate registration for the conference will start on Tuesday February 26 to allow out-of-town and international delegates the opportunity to see the Expo. Pre-registration to attend the Design Indaba conference will start from November 2007.

DESIGN INDABA AT INDEX

Ravi Naidoo, founder of Design Indaba, is set to leave for Copenhagen to present at the COPENHAGEN PRELUDE TO INDEX: Aiga Aspen Design Summit from August 23 to 25, 2007. This follows his participation on the judging panel for the INDEX:AWARD in June 2007.

The Copenhagen Prelude Conference is held to celebrate the newly launched alliance between INDEX: and AIGA/Aspen Design Summit, which will introduce a series of events between Aspen and Copenhagen that will focus on Design to Improve Life. During four sessions in two days, leading international design and innovation, thinkers and doers will lecture on, debate and engage in conversations with the audience on four themes and sub themes within the realm of User Centred Design and Innovation (UCDI) and Design to Improve Life.

Naidoo will present the overall focus of the session and share his experience regarding creative and business opportunities in Africa. In addition, he will showcase how UCDI can be actively implemented to ensure solutions to the major challenges that face the African continent. The debates and recommendations of the conference will be passed on to the AIGA|Aspen Design Summit in January 2008.

The results of the biggest design award in the world, the INDEX:AWARD, will also be announced. The award gives five category winners a prize of €100 000. Focussing on Design to Improve Life, the INDEX:AWARD further distinguishes itself by not categorising design according to traditional labels, rather asking that the nomination bodies think horizontally, across design categories and industries, when selecting their nominees for the five categories vital to human life: body, home, work, play and community.

Being a member of the jury judging this illustrious award was an honour for Naidoo. Leading designers, design researchers, design writers and design thinkers completed the international jury. These included: Nille Juul-Sorensen (associate director Arup); Arnold S Wasserman (chairman of the Idea Factory); Paola Antonelli (curator of design and architecture at the Museum of Modern Art); Alex Blanch (co-founder of blink.design and director of the Executive Board of Identidades Latinas); Ged Davis (co-president of Global Energy Assessment and deputy chairman of EcoCities); Hella Jongerius (designer and CEO of JongeriusLab); Pontus Wahlgren (senior industrial designer of IDEO); Dr Robert Blaich (president of Blaich Associates Design Management Consultants); John Heskett (chair professor of design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University); and Hael Kobayashi (digital entertainment executive).

INTERNATIONAL

CONNECTING'07 and the ICSID/IDSA World Design Congress will be taking place from October 17 to 20 2007, in San Francisco, California. This congress is likely to be the largest gathering of industrial designers to date, hosting design organisations, academics, practitioners and experts from around the world.

connecting07

It also celebrates the 50th anniversary of ICSID. The programs during CONNECTING'07 will explore the implications of an evermore connected world, devoting a day each to connecting physically, virtually and culturally. It will seek connections between design, business, brands, services, technology and society.
