Kids in the kitchen

"Cooking with Kids" is a cool new app – a collaboration between Hat-trick, Great British Chefs and Tesco – that aims to get children excited about cooking.

The Great British Chefs app - which we previously featured here – brings together the culinary expertise of some 12 top British chefs. The branding for the iPhone and iPad app was done by Hat-trick and features three menus comprising five courses from each of the chefs, with voice-control and how-to films to help people cook, as well as a shopping list function.

Now, some two years after the app was first launched, Hat-trick has collaborated with Great British Chefs once again to create the “Cooking with Kids” app, in association with supermarket group Tesco.

The app features an exclusive range of recipes from more than 20 of Britain’s foremost chefs, with an emphasis on recipes that would appeal to families.

Both Great British Chefs and Tesco believe that there are numerous benefits to be had in getting children involved in the kitchen, from the educational to the sociological, not to mention the health benefits.

In designing the branding for the app, Hat-trick wanted to retain the sophistication of the Great British Chefs brand while making it fun, friendly and for families.

The designers opted to use blackboards as the perfect solution for something food related. Also, it is something that is “ familiar to children and a great canvas to inspire imaginations”, says Garth Howat of Hat-trick.

Hat-trick worked with Rebecca Sutherland to illustrate a range of characters based on ingredients that are used in the app. There is also an animated intro sequence that sees the chalk drawings come to life.
