Boback Firoozbakht is a designer and developer who placed emphasis on the environment as it influences the decisions human beings make and inspires us in various ways. He sees design as an expression of the way in which we affect our surroundings. Firoozbakht plans to integrate his interest in design with his passion for business by creating a business focused on sustainable design tactics. With a focus on sustainability, he also believes that this generation needs to reconsider the way they practice their chosen careers.
1. Can design save the world? No.
2. What is your present state of mind? Confused.
3. What is your greatest achievement to date? Interviewing President Clinton.
4. What would you most like to change about the world? Nothing, there will always be problems.
5. Do you recycle? I do when possible, but I believe we should follow the Danish system of burning our trash to produce energy.
6. What is your most treasured possession? My family and education.
7. What does water taste like? Whatever it is surrounded by.
8. Who in the world, alive or dead, would you most like to have a drink with? Louis Kahn.
9. Do you have a creative/business muse? Jonathan Rose.
10. If you had to live inside a work of art, which piece would it be? Anything William Turner.
11. What is the opposite of design? It matters in what context. In our world today, design has no opposite. Everything is designed, from war to peace.
12. What advice would you give to emerging creatives? Connecting to those around you is vital to progress.
13. What are the (seven) wonders of the design world? Swyambhunath Stupa (Nepal), Isfahan (Iran), Home of Alvar Aalto (Finland), Museum of Islamic Art (Qatar), Table Mountain (South Africa), waiting to find my last two…
14. Have you ever seen insanity where you later saw creativity? Again, William Turner. His works are reversed creativity becoming insanity.
15. What's one thing that you haven't done that you would really like to do? Fly a plane.
16. How do you define creative success? When creativity makes someone’s life better.
17. If not design, what would you do? Be a pilot.
18. What is your favourite book? The Feast of Love by Charles Baxter.
19. What's your pet hate? Ignorance to the issues third world countries face on a daily basis.
20. What has been your favourite project to date? Casa da Musica, Porto, Portugal (Office for Metropolitan Architecture).
