Smelt is a glass blowing studio with the aim of promoting the exploration and innovative use of glass in South Africa. Smelt produces unique and beautiful products which it distributes to retailers in South Africa and abroad. Smelt has been actively collaborating with various glass artists and has been developing the skills of individuals from its partner factory, Glamosa Glass in rural KwaZulu-Natal. The studio has also focused on the training and development of upcoming artists through a mentorship programme sponsored by the Ekurhuleni Municipality and has hosted artists in an initiative sponsored by the National Arts Council. Under the leadership of designer Martli Jansen van Rensburg, the Smelt range includes high-end, limited-edition pieces, while the Smelt everyday range is distributed to retailers. The recently launched Smelt indigenous range has a distinctly South African feel to it.
