Design Africa sources and designs unique woven homeware from all over Africa. Founder, Binky Newman, spends a great deal of time in remote villages around Africa, working with marginalised female weavers who have an ancient heritage of weaving baskets. Using the traditional weaving techniques and stitches, Binky creates objects with a deeper story, blurring the boundaries between design and crafts. The Design Africa 2012 collection is filled with finely woven pieces in XL scale. Textures and patterns are highlighted and exaggerated; organic shapes are made bolder and the irregular is celebrated.
