A roadshow in 1994 to canvas support from the fragmented South African design community was not met with the expected enthusiasm. The overwhelming advice was not to take the project an inch further. Nonetheless, against all sensible objections, the first two-day Design Indaba Conference was held in 1995 and attracted a strong group of professionals who practised, commissioned or relied on design.
