Handwoven wall mats by Bofred

Bofred teams up with Sisters 4 Sisters to create textile wall art.

Art collective Bofred and community-based organisation Sisters 4 Sisters have teamed up to produce a series of handwoven wall hangings that made their debut at Design Indaba Expo 2015.

The design duo behind Bofred, Christa Botha and Carla Erasmus, design the hangings and source the wool, while the women in the Sisters 4 Sisters team are responsible for weaving the wall hangings.

The wall hangings come in two different colour variations – “Miriam Orange” and “Miriam Blue” – and can be customised to different size requirements. The fringe detail and Aztec print is a departure from Bofred’s signature Mid-Century style.

Bofred, which exhibited its furniture and décor items as part of the Emerging Creatives programme, is working towards creating a community of crafters who support and empower one another.

Botha and Erasmus work closely with the makers at Sisters 4 Sisters, a non-profit devoted to improving the lives of female victims of abuse. At the moment their range includes necklaces made from leather off-cuts but Bofred plans to extend the collection.

All the items created in collaboration with these skilled crafters are available through Bofred’s “Shop for a Cause” initiative, with a percentage of proceeds being allocated to help support the social and economic development of the crafters.
