Gilda B by Jacopo Foggini

Italian designer Jacopo Foggini sculpts an elegant chair using an unlikely material.

Jacopo Foggini’s Gilda B is an irregularly shaped-seat in a warm brandy hue made from extruded polycarbonate (a variant of industrial-grade plastic commonly used in roofing), shatterproof windows and optical lenses. The seat rests on slim black semi-gloss legs inspired by fifties design.

Extruded polycarbonate is easily moulded, allowing Foggini to sculpt the chair to a molten appearance. This material is also crystal-like in transparency with better light transmission than many kinds of glass.

The chair is a beautiful tribute to Foggini’s long-time friend, Gilda Bojardi. She is the editor in chief of Interni, an Italian interior design magazine, and a key figure in the Italian design world.

Gilda B is an impressive addition to Foggini’s family of furniture design pieces for Edra. The influential Italian manufacturer is exhibiting a collection of sofas and armchairs at the Karsten Greve gallery as a part of Passagen Interior Design Week Köln. Jacopo Foggini’s Gilda B will be the focal point of the exhibition.
