Tropical themed, woven blankets by designer Lilian Martinez

“Craftsmanship is really important to me because it’s the only way that I can reconcile introducing more things and objects into the world.”

Lilian Martinez is the founder of BFGF, an online store and art brand working with digitally printed textiles and natural fibres. BFGF, an acronym for Boyfriend Girlfriend, has produced a collection of woven blankets, which are digitally printed with various tropical motifs such as papaya’s, banana’s and people drinking cocktails while topless.

“I make cool and weird things,” says Martinez.

An artist and a graduate in photography from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), Martinez is involved in every step of the creative and production process such as sewing, pattern making, painting, digitally painting and graphic design.

“Craftsmanship is really important to me because it’s the only way that I can reconcile introducing more things and objects into the world.” Henri Matisse, the internet, “transcendent experiences”, and both tropical and desert landscapes inspire the Los-Angeles based designer.

"I like to explore a lot of the same colour palettes and themes within my work,” Martinez told Cool Hunting. “Conceptualising and designing a piece happens fairly organically. I like making lists and sketching. It's a really fun way to organize thoughts and ideas."

Martinez and her husband founded Ola Onda, a photographic company combining technical ability with creative vision to create images that are playful, imaginative, and contemporary.
